Among the many places to visit in Skardu, Upper Kachura Lake stands out for its combination of clear mountain water, rugged peaks and a quieter atmosphere than some of the area’s better-known tourist spots.
Located in the Kachura area of Skardu District, Upper Kachura Lake forms part of the Kachura lake system at roughly 2,500 metres above sea level. Lower Kachura Lake, better known as Shangrila Lake, is the more developed and heavily visited of the two. Upper Kachura has a more natural character and is often the more rewarding choice for travellers who want scenery rather than a resort experience.
The appeal of Upper Kachura Lake is its setting. The lake sits within the mountainous landscape of Baltistan, with steep rocky slopes rising around the water.
The colour and appearance of the lake can change with the light and weather, while the surrounding landscape gives photographers plenty of opportunities for wide mountain views and close details.
For visitors planning a trip to Skardu, Upper Kachura is an easy destination to combine with other attractions in the same part of the valley.
Upper Kachura is in the Kachura area outside central Skardu. The Government of Gilgit-Baltistan identifies Kachura Lakes among the principal tourist attractions of Skardu District.
Because travel times can vary with traffic, road conditions and where you are staying, it is better to plan the visit as part of a half-day or full sightseeing circuit rather than relying on an exact journey time.
If you are staying at Jabal e Rawah, ask locally about current road conditions and the most suitable vehicle for the day’s itinerary before leaving.
The main reason to visit is the landscape itself.
Take time to walk around the accessible areas, observe the changing colours of the water and enjoy the surrounding mountains rather than treating the lake as a quick photo stop.
Upper Kachura is particularly rewarding for landscape photography. Early and later daylight can produce very different views of the mountains and water.
The official Gilgit-Baltistan tourism department identifies Upper Kachura and Lower Kachura, also known as Shangrila Lake, as part of the Kachura lake system.
Visiting both on the same outing allows you to experience two very different sides of the area: the more developed Shangrila setting and the more natural character of Upper Kachura.
The most accessible period for sightseeing around Skardu is generally the warmer part of the year, when roads and surrounding attractions are more accessible.
Summer brings greener surroundings and easier access to many destinations around Skardu. Autumn can be especially attractive for photographers because of changing vegetation and clearer mountain landscapes.
Winter completely changes the character of the region. Snow and cold conditions can make travel more demanding, so visitors should check local conditions before planning a winter excursion.
For a day trip to Upper Kachura Lake, keep things simple:
Mountain weather can change quickly, so carrying an extra layer is sensible even when the weather looks warm in Skardu.
Kachura is part of a fragile mountain environment. Avoid leaving plastic or other waste behind, respect private property and local communities, and do not damage vegetation or the shoreline.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Department specifically advises visitors to protect the environment, dispose of litter properly and respect local culture and traditions.
Upper Kachura Lake works particularly well as part of a wider Skardu sightseeing day. Depending on conditions and your interests, the same journey can include Lower Kachura Lake and other attractions around the valley.
After exploring the mountains and lakes during the day, returning to a comfortable private retreat gives you time to slow down and enjoy the quieter side of Skardu.
